Michael Mehalic Obituary

Michael K. "Pete" Mehalic, 83, of Latrobe, died on Friday, Aug. 29, 2025, holding hands with his wife. He succumbed to injuries he sustained as the result of a tractor accident. He was born Nov. 18, 1941, in Latrobe, a son of the late Michael and Josephine (Shabella) Mehalic. Pete's father was killed in an auto accident the month before he was born. His mother, brother, and he moved back to the farm in Unity, where she was raised. Pete and his brother, William (Bill), were raised by their kind uncle, Mike Shabella, who taught them the value of hard work and many life skills. As a teenager, Michael's brother, Bill, bought his first backhoe, and he and Pete were in business. After years of hard work and purchasing many pieces of heavy equipment, the Mehalic brothers had dug ditches, foundations, and parking lots throughout Westmoreland County and surrounding areas, where they became well known. They then purchased a fleet of trucks to haul coal to power stations, followed by getting into the coal stripping business. Following his beloved brother Bill's sudden death in 1999, the businesses were closed down, and Pete went to work for Donegal Construction. He was a Ford man from the start. He and his 1963 Ford, Galaxie 427, R-code, convertible were legends. He purchased it new and kept it original for 54 years. He was also meticulous with their farm and loved to be at home and on the land. At age 68, he fell in love and married Sally Davis Amalong, a woman who loved him and was willing to have the challenge of her life. He loved her without reserve. At age 83, he decided to become a believer of Christ. Soon after that, he went to be with the Lord. We are forever thankful for the angels of God who surrounded us, prayed for us, and loved us through this most difficult time. He is survived by his wife, Sally; stepdaughters, Julie (Glen) Stott and Laurie Miller; grandsons, Justin and Zach Stott and Dylan Miller; his niece, Marnie (Joseph) Mehalic-Guy; his nephew, William; great-nieces, Trinity and Kennedy; and his faithful yellow lab, Chester. Friends and family are welcome to a celebration of Pete's life to be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025, at their home on the farm, 1115 Sessi Road, Latrobe. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to Sonrise Church, 1523 Lois Road, Greensburg, PA 15601, or Scouting America, 2 North Gate Square, Greensburg, PA 15601. I want to offer my deep condolences to Pete's family and friends. I knew Pete and Bill all my life. They did great work for me and were great friends.
Seeing and talking to Pete, and seeing the Ford, at car shows when I was home was a real treat. Pete was a great person and an old friend.
May he Rest In Peace with Bill.
