Richard Groth Obituary

Richard B. Groth, 89, of Export, died Friday, June 6, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born June 2, 1936, in Trafford, son of the late Ernest and Helen (Glunt) Groth. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald and Fred; and his dear sister, Geraldine Drakulic; and brother-in-law, Arthur Pignocco. He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and graduated from Duquesne University as an electrical engineer. Richard began his career at U.S. Steel Research, where he met his to-be wife, Theresa, and retired as a principal systems engineer for Westinghouse. He was a long-time member of the IEEE Software Engineering Institute, a 50+ year member of the Train Collectors Association, and a member of the Murrysville Area Radio Control Airplane Society. He was active in the Murrysville community and enjoyed sharing his love of trains, planes, baseball, and science with friends and family at Murrysville Community Park, where he would fly his planes for all to enjoy. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Theresa (Pignocco) Groth of Jeannette; children, Rebecca Miller of Murrysville, Richard Groth and his wife, Heidi of Lebanon Township, NJ, and Susan Pitzer and her husband, Rick of Jeannette; his brother, Randall Groth of Swissvale; his sister-in-law, Joyce Pignocco of Greensboro, Georgia; and his nine grandchildren, Sarah, Katie and her husband, Noah, Luke, Camryn, Ricky, Matthew, Christian, Kasen, and Peyton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 3 until 7 p.m. Monday, June 9, 2025, in the MASON-GELDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 201 N. First St., Jeannette.
