Elaine Hower Obituary

Rev. Elaine Marie Hower, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and devoted minister, peacefully passed away on Oct. 21, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on Aug. 4, 1948, in Ellwood City, she was the cherished only daughter of the late Howard and Dorothy (Nye) Rader. Elaine spent her formative years in Zelienople, PA, where she graduated as valedictorian from Seneca Valley High School in 1966. Her passion for learning led her to Allegheny College, where she majored in English and History. It was here that she met the love of her life, Robert David Hower, Sr. After their marriage, they moved to Philadelphia, allowing Robert to pursue his medical education at Temple University while Elaine worked as a librarian, nurturing her lifelong love for books and knowledge. The family later settled in Pittsburgh, welcoming three sons: Robert, Michael, and John. In 1976, they moved to Natrona Heights, where they created countless cherished memories before relocating to Oakmont, PA, in 2019. Elaine was a lifelong learner, earning her Bachelors Degree in Teaching from Chatham University and her Master of Divinity from Gettysburg College. She served faithfully as a Lutheran pastor in Spring Church, PA, and at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Lower Burrell, PA, dedicating her life to ministering to the sick, providing counsel to parishioners, and delivering heartfelt sermons every Sunday until her retirement in 2019. Elaine treasured the moments spent with her family and grandchildren, enriching their lives with love and wisdom. She particularly enjoyed celebrating holidays and birthdays, always engaging in her grandchildren's interests with enthusiasm and joy. Her unwavering commitment to her family and community will be forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Elaine's spirit will continue to inspire those she touched with her kindness, dedication, and profound love. Elaine was preceded in death by her father (Howard Rader), mother (Dorothy Rader), and daughter-in-law (Erica Hower). She is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Robert D. Hower, of 55 years; three sons, Dr. Robert D. (Rebecca) Hower, Erie, PA, Michael H. (Melissa) Hower, Ed.D., Freeport, PA, Dr. John T. (Tara Croker) Hower, Oakmont, PA; nine grandchildren, Sophia, Jackson, Michael, Benjamin, James, Molly, Jake, Gabriel, and Ryan. Also survived by three nieces and a nephew. Friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday in the GIUNTA-BERTUCCI FUNERAL HOME, INC., 1509 Fifth Ave., Arnold, PA 15068, John Paul Bertucci Owner/Supervisor. A Funeral Service will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday in the Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1500 Broadview Blvd., Natrona Heights, PA 15065. Everyone attending, please go directly to the church.
