PIQUA – Bertha (Dot) Hatcher of Piqua, Ohio, passed away on Sept. 11, 2025. She was born on Nov. 10, 1924 in Harrison, Ohio, the daughter of Virgil and Bertha Lewis.
Her mother died of complications with her birth. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, Mildred and Raymond Bunnell. Bertha had two older brothers, Jacque and Nelson, and three half-sisters, Ruth, Jean, Virginia and half-brother Jim.
Ruth and Jean survive.
She married George Major in 1946. George preceded her in death as did her daughter Marsha Leistner and one infant, Samuel.
Her surviving children are Michael Major (Jane) of Westville, Ohio, and Sue Johnson of Prescott, Arizona.
Her grandchildren include Monica (Brad) Fellers, Sara (Nate) Underwood, Annie (Fred) Urbanek, Sarah (Chad) Mackert, David (Lauren) Major, Stephen (Hailey) Major and Amber (Matt) Basford. She also had 14 great-grandchildren.
Her second marriage was to William Hatcher (deceased) of New Carlisle and her dear stepchildren from that marriage include Michael Hatcher (Rick) of Beavercreek, Don Hatcher (Sandy) of Champaign County, Jill Van Ausdal (Don) (deceased 2009) and Adrienne Carabell (deceased 2019). The Hatcher side of the family have six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Bertha graduated from Harrison High School in 1941 and was employed by Shillito's and Ohio Bell Telephone Co. Later in life she worked as postmaster in Pleasant Hill, Ohio, retiring in 1988.
Dot loved her family and friends, gardening, the arts and trips to the casinos. She was proud to sing with the New Carlisle choir. She also enjoyed ceramics, ocean cruises and traveling in general.
The staff at Garbry Ridge, Piqua, were like extended family and we thank them for their loving care.
A celebration of her life will be planned for a later date.
Memorial donations can be made to the United Church of Christ, Pleasant Hill, Ohio, or to the Honey Creek Presbyterian Church, New Carlisle, Ohio.
