Eleanor Ruth Sawyer Fletcher
Claremont, NH - Eleanor Ruth Sawyer Fletcher, 85, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. A beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Eleanor will be remembered always for her infectious laugh and the kindness she extended to everyone she met.
Born on August 15, 1939, in Keene, New Hampshire, Eleanor was the daughter of Dr John E. and Ruth Sawyer. Raised in Windsor, Vermont, she was the eldest of six including sisters Beverly (Brad) Dunbar, Judy (Laurel) Husband, Audrey (Ronnie) Lyman, Jean (Wayne) McCutcheon, and brother John (Carleen) Sawyer.
Eleanor graduated from Windsor High School in 1959, she went on to study at Notre Dame College to study Real Estate, eventually becoming a Broker/Owner of Falcon Realty. She also attended numerous travel schools including Breech Institute operated by TWA.
Family was the center of Eleanor's world. She was a devoted mother to Mark Fletcher, Traci (George) Billesimo, Tonya (Michael) Douglas, Stephanie Fletcher, and Tammara (Holbrook) Hays. She was also a proud and loving grandmother to nine grandchildren-Brittany, Ashley, Heather, Mitchell, Allison, Serena, Annie, Alex, and Gabrielle-and a cherished great-grandmother to Ellie, Brooks, Cillian, Niall, Adeline, Wrenley, Evelyn, and Nora.
Eleanor dedicated more than 25 years to the corporate travel industry, working for Dartmouth Travel, Claremont Travel, and later retiring from Garber Travel/FCM in 2012. Before her career in travel, she was the backbone of the family veterinary practice, for former husband, Dr. Lee O. Fletcher. She also served as Executive Director of the Claremont Chamber of Commerce and was a faculty member at the New England School of Travel.
An avid traveler, Eleanor visited nearly all the Caribbean islands, explored South America, Europe, and Africa, and especially loved cruising the world with her daughter Traci. Her travels provided her with many great experiences but also deepened her appreciation and acceptance of people from all walks of life.
Those who knew Eleanor felt her overwhelming warmth. She had a passion for fashion-particularly shoes-and never left the house without earrings, nail polish, or lipstick. Her elegance and loving heart left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Eleanor was a member of St Paul's Church in Windsor. She served her community on many boards, including presiding as president of the Sullivan County Rehab Center Board, as Chair of the committee of community members for Valley Regional Hospital including Cardiac Capers, trustee of the Fisk Free Library, and on state and local boards for the League of Women Voters.
A graveside service will be held 2pm Friday, August 15, 2025 at the Ascutney Cemetery in Windsor. A celebration of Eleanor and her son Mark Fletcher lives will follow at the Elks Club in Windsor.
