Martin Arkowitz Obituary

Martin Arkowitz

hanover, NH - Martin Arkowitz, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed mathematician, died on June 13th, 2025 at the age of 90. Prior to coming to Dartmouth College where he was a professor for almost 50 years, he earned his bachelor's degree from Columbia University and his doctorate from Cornell University. He devoted his life to the pursuit of knowledge and his joy of mathematics. His contributions to algebraic topology and rational homotopy earned him great respect in the academic community. However, it was his warmth, kindness, quirky humor, and lifelong love of ice cream that left the deepest impression on those who knew him.

Martin is survived by Eleanor, his wife for the last 68 years; his sons David, Robert and Steven; his daughters-in-law Diane, Martine, and Tory; and his grandsons Greg, Jake, and Dylan. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, former students, and colleagues alike.
