John King Obituary
John Winston King, Sr., a pioneering magistrate judge, U.S. Army veteran, and proud Howard University graduate, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2025. He was 87 years old and most recently resided in Bowie, Maryland. To close friends and family, he was affectionately known as "Skeezix"—a name that reflected his warmth, wit, and deep personal connections.
Born in New York to Ruby Cummings and raised by his mother and stepfather, Albert King, John showed early academic promise and athletic ability. He graduated from Salesian High School in New Rochelle in 1955, where he competed in baseball, basketball, and track. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958, he earned both undergraduate and law degrees from Howard University, guided by its motto: Veritas et Utilitas—"Truth and Service."
Early in his legal career, John worked in criminal defense, an experience that sharpened his awareness of inequities in the justice system and shaped his firm belief in fairness under the law. He went on to be appointed as a Commissioner in the D.C. Superior Court, a position that later transitioned into what is now known as Magistrate Judge. He served in this role with distinction until his retirement in 2003.
Judge King played a central role in elevating the credibility and authority of the magistrate bench. He was a fierce advocate for judicial consistency, professionalism, and independence. His measured and principled rulings reflected a deep respect for the law, and he was never one to rubber-stamp decisions. Known for his commanding presence, he earned the nickname "Darth Vader" among attorneys—a title he embraced with humor, even donning the costume briefly one Halloween.
During his years in the D.C. area, he was a proud member of the Metro Duffers Golf Club. After retirement, he relocated to Barefoot Resort in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he enjoyed golf, poker nights, and community life. A lover of music, John's tastes ranged from Motown to opera, with favorite artists including Joe, Seal, and John Legend. He was also a student of philosophy and an insightful conversationalist.
Though formidable in court, John was known by those closest to him as loyal, thoughtful, and principled. The nickname "Skeezix" captured the softer side of a man who mentored generously, stood by his convictions, and lived with quiet purpose.
He is survived by his daughter, Candace King; stepson, Kirk Reid; daughter-in-law, Kimberly Black King; granddaughter, Erin King; and step-grandson, Justin Black. He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores King; son, John W. King, Jr. ("Grundy"); and former spouses Cynthia Barksdale and Shelia High King.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Howard University School of Law or a legal aid organization that supports access to justice.
