Shirley K. Mohlis, 72, of Sumner, died Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30?a.m., Thursday, May 15, 2025, at St. John Lutheran Church-Buck Creek, rural Sumner with Rev. Kyle Barton officiating. Interment will follow at the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8?p.m., Wednesday, May 14, at Becker and Son Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Thursday. Memorials may be made in Shirley's name to St. John Lutheran Church-Buck Creek or Gundersen Hospice. Becker & Son Funeral Home in Sumner is assisting Shirley's family. www.beckermilnesrettig.com.Shirley Kay, daughter of Stanley and Mabel (Zipse) Douglas, was born January 15, 1953, in New Hampton. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Shirley's educational journey was marked by her graduation from New Hampton High School in 1971. She furthered her education at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, where she earned a degree in Upholstery. On June 17, 1972, she was united in marriage with Lyle Mohlis at St. John Lutheran Church-Buck Creek rural Sumner. Their union was blessed with two sons, Brian and Kevin. Her professional life was characterized by her time at Tri-Fab, then later at Hillcrest Nursing Home. Embracing the role of homemaker while her children were young, Shirley later returned to Hillcrest and retired in 2018 after thirty plus years of service. She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church-Buck Creek. Beyond her work and family life, Shirley had a rich array of interests that brought her much happiness. She was an avid gardener, nurturing her plants and flowers. A member of a local card club, Shirley enjoyed the camaraderie and challenge of the games. Her love of puzzles, both jigsaw and Sudoku, reflected her sharp mind and patience. Shirley's talents extended to sewing and canning. She also enjoyed fishing and loved spending time with her granddaughters.
Shirley's life will be celebrated and remembered for the profound impact she had on her family and community. Her presence will be missed, but the memories she created will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved her. Shirley's spirit will forever be a guiding light for her family and friends. Shirley's generosity is reflective in her decision to be a donor, impacting many people's lives in a positive manner.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Lyle of Sumner; two sons, Brian (Jen) Mohlis of Tripoli and Kevin Mohlis of Sumner; two granddaughters, Lexi (Andrew) Koresh of Topeka, Kansas, and Becca Mohlis of Coralville; siblings, Lorna Eaton of Waterloo, Gary Douglas of New Hampton, Ken (Jeanine) Douglas of New Hampton, Barb Douglas of Sumner, Dale (Karen) Douglas of Britt, and Ron Douglas of Waverly; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Dennis Mohlis of Sumner, Duane and Carolyn Mohlis of Tripoli, and Ernest and Theresa Mohlis of Waverly; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Luella and Ernest Mohlis; and two sisters, Mary Jo Rings and Judith Langdon.
