Carol Frederickson Obituary
Carol Jay Frederickson
June 28, 1940 - August 7, 2025
Carol Jay Washburn Frederickson passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025, surrounded by her family in Mission Viejo, Ca. Born in Wenatchee, Wash., on June 28, 1940, to Calvin Jay Washburn and Lyla Mae Washburn, Carol was a 1958 graduate of Wenatchee High School. Following graduation, she began her career as a Dental Assistant in Wenatchee.
In 1962, Carol married her high school sweetheart, Dwaine Wand. The couple relocated to Whitman Air Force Base in Missouri, where Carol continued her work as a Dental Assistant. After completing his military obligation, Dwaine commenced employment with Bethlehem Steel Company, which prompted moves to Pennsylvania and back to Washington State. They settled in Bellevue, where Carol maintained her dental career on Mercer Island. In November 1970, Carol was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Tragically, on Christmas Eve of that year, Dwaine passed away in an automobile accident after eight years of marriage.
Subsequently, Carol met Fred Frederickson, and together they started a new chapter in her life. They were married in Las Vegas on October 21, 1971. Carol then pursued her passion for interior design, often remarking on her transition "from one interior to another." In 1974, Carol and Fred welcomed their daughter and only child, Tiffany Jay (Smith). The family moved to a newly redesigned home in Bellevue in 1977, reflecting Carol's talent in design and decoration. In 1989, as her mobility became affected by Multiple Sclerosis, Carol undertook the design and construction of an accessible home in Kirkland (Bridle Trails), enabling her independence with the use of a scooter and specially equipped minivan.
Carol's interests were wide-ranging, including sewing, travel, home design, and shopping, through which she forged lasting relationships. She traveled extensively across the United States with her family, supporting her daughter Tiffany's equestrian pursuits, and together they achieved multiple National Championships with Arabian horses.
Carol was known for her warmth and resilience, qualities that inspired those around her. She formed deep friendships and was consistently supportive of others. Her community engagement included active participation in the Seattle Children's Hospital Guild and dedicated involvement in her grandsons Cruz and Jagger's lives.
After her husband Fred's passing in 2023, Carol made the decision to move from Kirkland to Mission Viejo. She did so in March of 2025. She spent her final months enjoying time with her daughter, son-in-law, and grandsons, and partaking in her favorite activities.
Carol is predeceased by her husbands, Dwaine Wand and Fred Frederickson, and her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Tiffany Smith; son-in-law, Corey Smith; grandsons, Cruz and Jagger Smith of Trabuco Canyon, Ca.; sisters, Jan West (Robert) of East Wenatchee, Wash., Julie Olin (Stan) of Los Alamitos, Ca., and Kathryn Chester (Richard) of Snohomish, Wash.; along with eight nieces and nephews and sixteen grand-nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at Willows Lodge on March 21, 2026 from 12 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
