John Swedo Obituary

John L. Swedo Jr., passed away on July 10, 2025, surrounded by family after a long battle with illness. John was born in Coney Island, New York on January 25,1951 to Louise (Kolz) Swedo and her husband John Leo Swedo. He spent much of his childhood with family out of state due to the death of his mother at a young age. John was a 1973 graduate of UMBC, Baltimore County. He later became a police officer in Baltimore City. One of John's proudest accomplishments was being named Policeman of the Year in 1975. After leaving the police force in 1981 John spent the remainder of his professional life in various roles in the insurance industry. John retired as Senior Vice President of Claims from Verisk in 2010. In John's personal time he enjoyed the company of animals, watching football and women's basketball. John was the UConn Women's Basketball team's biggest fan. He did not miss a final four championship game for over a decade. John loved to travel the world. After college John backpacked through Europe with a friend. In his later years John was able to do some more international travel. He was always looking forward to his next trip. John had quite the imagination and did whatever he could do to make his children. He had quite the imagination and did whatever he could do to make his children and grandchildren laugh, especially when they were little. A perfect example of this is how he got the name Beep-Beep from his oldest granddaughters. John wanted them to call him GP, pronounced like Jeep, because he read it in GQ. He was convinced he was too young to be a granddad. He used to tell the girls "Beep-Beep it's GP." GP never took off, but Beep-Beep stuck. He was the world's only Beep-Beep, which was very fitting for him. John is predeceased by his parents, brother Michael Swedo and sister Catherine (Swedo) Durnan. John is survived by daughter Dannielle Swedo Francis and husband Tim (Simsbury CT), daughter Rachel (Swedo) Seymour and spouse Jenn (Putnam CT), granddaughters Catherine, Abigail, Olivia and Madeline Francis, companion Linda Swedo, brother Steven Swedo as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. John was a loving father, beep-beep, friend, cousin and uncle. His absence will be strongly felt by all who had the honor of knowing him. A special thanks to compassionate doctors at UCONN Health for the excellent care John received over the past few years and to McLean Home Health & Hospice services. The nurses from McLean are literal angels and we will forever be grateful for their loving care. John's early struggles in life gave him an extremely generous spirit and a heart for the less fortunate. He was especially invested in the welfare of animals. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the CT Humane Society in John's honor. John chose to be cremated and there will be no public services.
