William Thompson Sr Obituary

William M. Thompson, 91, Trailblazing Educator and Civic Leader, passed away peacefully on Thursday July 24, 2025 at Seabury CCRC in Bloomfield, CT surrounded by loved ones. Mr. Thompson was a beloved figure in the Hartford community, remembered not only for his significant contributions to education but also for his passion for children and young adults, serving as a steadfast pillar of support and guidance. He was also known for his unwavering commitment to public service and his profound love for his family and close friends. Born in High Point, North Carolina, Mr. Thompson was the only child and son of Robert and Panater (Franklin) Thompson. After graduating from William Penn High School in his hometown, he went on to West Virginia State University, where he graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. While there, he pledged and became a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and was also an accomplished varsity tennis player for the university. It was at West Virginia State that he met the love of his life, Shirley Anne Washington, who was also attending the university. He continued his studies at The Ohio State University before answering the call to serve his country in the United States Army; he was primarily stationed in Germany, where he also played tennis for the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, he earned a Master of Education degree and an Administration Certification from the University of Hartford. Mr. Thompson began his distinguished career in education with the Hartford Public School System in 1963, initially working at the elementary level for six years. Concurrently, he shared his love for tennis by teaching children and adults as part of the City of Hartford's Recreation Department. Mr. Thompson ascended through the administrative ranks, and in 1974, he broke barriers when he was appointed the first Black Principal of Hartford Public High School, the second-oldest public high school in the United States. He led the institution for a decade before being named the first Black Adult Education Director for Hartford Public Schools, a position he held until his retirement in 1994. He immensely cherished each of his positions within Hartford's educational system, always striving to help students, parents, and administrators become the best versions of themselves. In retirement, he remained a voracious reader until recently, pouring daily over various newspapers and other periodicals, keeping abreast of local, national, and international news. He often shared articles and newspapers with friends and family, sparking lively discussions. Mr. Thompson indulged his passion for travel along with his wife and family, visiting 44 states, including Alaska and Hawaii, and traveling internationally. He especially enjoyed his winter trips to Florida with his Keney Park Golf Buddies, affectionately known as "The Sunday Faithful." He was a dedicated member of the men's clubs at both Keney Park and Wintonbury Hills Golf Courses for decades. His love for golf extended to civic engagement; he served on the Bloomfield Economic Development Committee, which was instrumental in the creation of Wintonbury Hills Golf Course and the selection of renowned architect Pete Dye for its design. Mr. Thompson was a dedicated member of numerous organizations throughout his life. He was a proud 70-year member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and a Life Member of the American Legion. A Mason, he was a member of Tuscan Lodge #17 F & AM, Hartford, CT. He also actively participated in various educational associations. His faith was a guiding principle, and he worshiped at both Metropolitan AME Zion Church and Saint Monica's Episcopal Church. Mr. Thompson was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Panater Thompson. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Shirley; his children, William Thompson Jr. (Kathy), Dr. Cynthia Thompson, grandson, William Thompson III, Esq. (Carolyn); and his cherished great-grandson, William Thompson IV. In addition, Mr. Thompson leaves behind his sister-in-law, Jean Washington; his nephew, Perry Washington Sr.; his grandnephew, Perry Washington Jr.; his grandnieces, Cindy Washington and Joy Washington; and many other beloved relatives and friends. William M. Thompson leaves behind a lasting legacy of transformative leadership, selfless service, and enduring love. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
