Thomas Gardner Obituary
Thomas A. Gardner, Jr., a devoted family man, skilled craftsman, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025 at the age of 89. Born in Oak Ridge, TN in 1935, Tom lived a life marked by hard work, love, and a steadfast dedication to those around him.
In 1954, he began his career at Union Carbide, where he worked faithfully for 37 years, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues through his work ethic, skill, and quiet integrity. After retirement, he worked Jerry Duncan Ford part-time for 20 years.
Outside of work, Tom's passions were many. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed countless frames at the bowling alley, and was a proud collector of Hot Wheels. His love for cars went beyond the surface. He not only knew how to fix them but also took great pride in keeping them spotless. His meticulous care and attention to detail were a reflection of the way he approached life itself.
Tom was a member of Beech Park Baptist Church and was an avid Christian who exemplified a steadfast dedication to his Lord and Savior through faith and fellowship.
Some of Tom's greatest joy came from his family, and he embraced his role as a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather and great-grandfather with his whole heart.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Phyllis Gardner; his sons, Jim (Cindy) Gardner and Scott (Sherri) Gardner; his grandchildren, Christopher (Gabbi) Gardner, Shyla Gardner, Jordan Gardner, Jacob Gardner, Logan Ferguson, Owen Ferguson, and Emily Ford; and his great-grandson, Jace Foley, with another great-grandchild expected soon. He is also survived by his siblings, Joe (Jamia) Gardner, Ray (Annie) Gardner, and Sally Gardner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas A. Gardner, Sr. and Ada Gardner.
A receiving of friends will be held on Sunday, August 17, 2025 at Beech Park Baptist Church (1085 E Tri-County Blvd., Oliver Springs, TN 37840) from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. Service immediately to follow at 7:00 PM. Tom will be laid to rest at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 18, 2025 at Anderson Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Beech Park Baptist Church building fund.
Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that Tom's life was full, his legacy enduring, and his faith sure. His memory will remain a cherished blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
