James Cooper Obituary

James O. "Coop" Cooper, 69, of Roscoe, IL, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 16, 2025. "His race was run, and God has won." Jim was born on November 22, 1955, in Pineville, West Virginia to Lloyd and Margaret (Bower) Cooper. He was raised and educated in Rockford, IL, and graduated from East High School in 1973. After high school, Jim worked in various mechanical shops until a motorcycle accident in 1982 resulted in a traumatic brain injury. Following rehabilitation, he took on different roles until finding his long-term position with the Rockford Park District in 1990. He proudly retired in 2023 after 33 fulfilling years of service. On January 3, 1998, Jim married the love of his life, Deen, after meeting at First Free Church. Jim was a longtime member of Central Christian Church in Beloit, WI, and most recently a member of Park City Church in Machesney Park, IL. He enjoyed fishing, fly tying, woodworking, and music. He had a gift for conversation, a love of telling jokes (often revealing the punchline first), and a ready smile for everyone he met. Jim was an enthusiastic fan of the Chicago Bears and the Chicago White Sox. A proud big brother, dedicated blood donor, and active member of the Loves Park Lions Club, Jim was passionate about advocacy, especially for those with disabilities. He was known for his positivity, resilience, and love of people. His loyal dog, Jaxson, was his constant companion and best friend. (Yes, good boy.) Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Deen; stepsons, Jason (Laura) McDonald and Dax McDonald; brother, Terry Cooper; brothers-in-law, Tom Schuur and Keith (Connie) McGregor; niece, Kim Elam; great-nephews, Justin and Austin Peterson; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Sue Schuur, and several other cherished family members. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Cherie, Ashlee, Keith, Dax, Sheila, and St. Croix Hospice for their compassionate care. Memorials may be made to People First of Illinois, Cause for Paws Rescue, or The Arc of Winnebago, Boone, and Ogle Counties. Jim was such a sweet guy. Always had a joke. I will never forget him mostly because he called me Barb.

It was a pleasure to meet Jim and see his smiling face every time he came to the bank with Deen. "Love you Jim" you will be missed. May God give comfort to Deen and your family during this time.

I worked at the blood center for years and always enjoyed Jim. I would see him about town and he was always so friendly. He will be missed.

Very sorry to hear of my school friend that had so much fun in life before and after his accident. People could learn from him all the love he had in him. Just like the love his mother gave. God is receiving a real loving person to God. God bless the family remember the the smiles he put on your faces! You live on in my heart friend never forget the good times!
