Mary Hicks Obituary

MARION, VA Mary Olinger Hicks, age 94, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 3, 2025, at the Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehab in Rural Retreat, VA. Mary was born in Rich Valley, VA to the late Thomas Herman Olinger & Minnie Chapman Olinger. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years Mason B. Hicks; daughter Linda H. Hash; son Michael D. Hicks; sister Ruby Cardwell & husband Edd; brother Herman "Gene" Olinger; and nephew Jeff Walton. Mary graduated from Rich Valley High School and went on to earn her nursing degree from Radford College. She spent many years caring for others at the Thomas McKee Hospital in Saltville, VA. Later, she worked as a receptionist for Dr. Jim and Dr. Charles Thompson in Marion, before finishing her career in bookkeeping for Dr. James McDowell. A founding member of the First Church of God in Marion, Mary had a beautiful love for music and sang with both the church choir and the Joyful Noise Choir. She found joy in planting flowers, always giving Mason something to mow around, and was known for her Sunday dinners, welcoming family, friends, and anyone else who stopped by to a table filled with good food and warmth. Survivors include her son Gerald M. Hicks & wife Anita; son-in-law Eddie Hash; granddaughter Jenn Hash Blair & husband Steve; sister Beulah Walton; brother Ernie Olinger; sister-in-law Pauline Olinger; along with several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM, Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the First Church of God in Marion with Rev. Matt Holman officiating. Entombment will follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00PM, on Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mary to the First Church of God. I met Mary at Dr Thompson’s office many yrs ago and she was so knowledgeable when I asked her any question. I did not know she had also gone to nursing school like I did many yrs later. Always such a very nice person!
Then after she invited Donna Vernon to Marion first church of God then Donna invited me there and I got to know Mary better. Such an easy person to get to know, always so so sweet. Her and husband will both be missed. She and husband were strong Christians. We’ll all miss them and we miss their daughter also., strong Christian also. May God give all family & friends peace very soon. I came to Loraine’s viewing and became sick so had to leave so I hated I didn’t get to her viewing and funeral but Mary will understand.

Our family lived beside the Hicks family 60+ years ago.
A very good family with excellent character. Very sorry to see that of the Hick's children died prematurely.

I remember Mrs Hicks as a very beautiful woman and also very sweet. A very fulfilling life.

Jerry I’m so sorry for your loss! Your Mom was always sweet , loving and so kind to me and Timmie. I often think of our fun times swinging on the front porch at Mommy Hicks home in Saltville. She always had a smile on her face even when she came to me with the longest needle I believe I had ever seen as a child at the Dr’s office! Lol I’m sure I was her Worst patient! I know she will be missed and our prayers are with you. I rest assured we will see her again soon just hold on and keep Jesus in your Heart. Love and Prayers. Debbie Jackson Bates

Jerry and Family, The Hicks family was my second family. Linda was a friend and sister and Mrs Hicks was a joy to many people including myself. I was always welcomed and loved when visiting because she made sure I was. I am so sorry of her passing. I have comfort and peace knowing she is with Jesus, family and Linda is with her Mom.

As a result of Mary inviting me to church, she became a close friend, a mentor and my hero because of her faithfulness to God. Thank you, Jesus for your saving grace and letting me know I will see my friend again in heaven. Donna Vernon
